First airing in April 1973 Zone Fighter was a TV show made by Toho to compete with the rise of television and many super sentai shows including Ultraman. It is also known as Meteor-Man Zone. The show documented the adventures of the Zone family on Earth after the destruction of their home planet Peaceland by an evil alien race known as the Garoga. Using their powers and weapons they fight tooth and claw to save their new home from these invaders. When The Gargoa use giant monsters to attack, called Terror-Beasts, the oldest son of the Zone family transforms into a giant called Zone Fighter and battles the beasts to the death.
The show was most well known for having guest appearances by some of Toho's more well known crations, Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Gigan to try and help with the shows ratings and because of this the show is considered canon with the Showa Godzilla films (1954-1975) and takes place between the events of Godzilla vs Megalon (1973) and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974). Sadly the show met an early end. On September 24th of the same year episode 26 was aired and would become the final episode of the show. The main reason for the show being canceled was because it wasn't doing well with ratings but some also think it was because of the oil crisis of the same year although that had not reached it's peak until October. However it seems the show has gained a sort of cult following as reruns of the show have been playing as recently as April 2008 in Japan and many fans are hoping for a DVD release outside of Japan and some are even hoping for Zone Fighter to be a playable fighter in a future Godzilla game. The Meteor Man is one of Toho's more obscure works along with the likes of Varan but thanks to the internet he has gained some attention lately partly in thanks to Godzilla, Gigan, and King Ghidorah being on the show.
